“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”– Aristotle
The one and the only thing you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your experiences and your vision are all yours and yours alone. School teaches us about things and how they work. We reach the highest levels of academic studies just to know about the outside world without knowing much about the inner world. The song by the great Temptations, I’ve Never Been to Me! The lyrics say: “Ooh I’ve been to Georgia and California, oh, anywhere I could run. But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free. I’ve been to paradise, but I’ve never been to me.”
Next time you see a group of people talking, notice what the conversation is about, I bet it is about things out there and other people, not themselves. This is unfortunately how we are socialised to think. Talking about yourself is like tabooed. How much do you know yourself? When you know yourself you are empowered and when you accept yourself you are invincible.
Below is the journey I took to discover myself:
- I wrote down the things I did in the past that really made me feel good about myself.
- I then asked myself, for each of them, what exactly made me feel good about it.
- I studied people that were so good in their crafts and found myself attracted to some, like speaking, writing and giving advice to people. When you deliberately study people in different fields, at some point, something within you shifts. Your intuition which is your divine knowing just kicks in and that’s when you just know that you are meant to do that. This is a deliberate and long process. Once you do this, you start connecting the dots and realizing similar things you did that you didn’t notice you were even doing.
- The last step for me was finding a coach and mentor. A coach is someone that will help you discover yourself and expose especially the self-limiting beliefs that are holding you back and also help you see possibilities in your life. So, he wakes you up, he bursts your bubble. The mentor on the other hand is someone who is well experienced in your chosen field who helps you navigate the field and guide you along the journey. You need to be careful though in choosing these people, you want someone who is a good example of what you want to be and more. I am often asked by audiences wherever I speak and in different media platforms as to how I discovered me and I really felt that I needed to openly answer it and empower you as well. The world has long been waiting for you, come out now!
Socrates, one of the greatest minds that ever graced this planet once said, “Know thyself.” Traditional education and society has taught you about things and how to conform, now it’s the time to come back home and learn about yourself which is the beginning of wisdom and true happiness.
