Stop Making Excuses?

“Ninety nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.” – George Washington Carver

Excusitis is the behaviour of a person that finds all sorts of excuses to justify their poor performance and results or lack of action. Excuses are the tools of the weak and incompetent used to build monuments of nothingness. Those who excel in it, seldom excel in anything but excuses.

Life has shown us again and again that strength doesn’t come from what you can do but from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t do. As a trained engineer, manager and leader, I never thought I was meant to help people, especially business leaders maximize their results and well-being. But, I always felt that there was more to life and being a curious person, I started searching for that more. When you are curious, you keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things. Curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. I am always passionately curious. What else can this be? Can you stretch it more? What can happen if I turn this upside down? What new idea can I find in this book? These are but some of the questions I keep asking myself on a daily basis and that’s curiosity.

Whatever you make excuses for, you get to keep. In life, you’ll never go any higher than you think, that’s a fundamental law you need to understand. No matter how old you are now, you are never too young or too old for success or going after what you want. Just think about it:

  1. Helen Keller, at the age of 19 months, became deaf and blind. But that didn’t stop her. She was the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.
  2. Mozart was already competent on keyboard and violin; he composed from the age of 5.
  3. John Lennon was 20 years and Paul McCartney was 18 when the Beatles had their first concert in 1961.
  4. Nelson Mandela was 76 when he became President.

I can go on and on this. The truth is, you are never too young or too old for going after what you want. So, stop making excuses.

I like what Steve Maraboli said, “Your complaints, your drama, your victim mentality, your whining, your blaming, and all of your excuses have NEVER gotten you even a single step closer to your goals or dreams. Let go of your nonsense. Let go of the delusion that you DESERVE better and go EARN it! Today is a new day!”

Seeking pity, blaming your sad and disadvantaged past will never get you anywhere, I was there myself and many others but it dawned on me that I had the power to live my dreams. Let today be the day that you choose to be a beacon of hope, that shining example that reminds those who are going through the fiery furnaces of the world that it can be done, in spite of. The world needs you, step up!
