“It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in no goal to reach.” – Benjamin E. Mays
Life has taught me again and again that you attract what you are, not what you want. If you want great things, be a great person, period.
How are you supposed to hit anything if you don’t know what it is? More often, people won’t specify their goals because they don’t want to specify conditions for failure. So, if you keep yourself vague and foggy, they think, protects you from the pain of failure. People don’t want to know when they fail because that’s painful and disgraceful, they prefer keeping themselves blind so that they don’t see when they fail which is disastrous. The truth is, failing to set goals means you are setting yourself for failing all the time, but you won’t know it until you fail so badly that you are completely done. You can avoid that willful blindness.
Challenges and failures are what reveal us to ourselves. The goal is to have a vision for your life such that all your efforts are justified. Hellen Keller who turned blind and deaf at the age of 19 months old and lived in this condition until she died at the age of 87 years said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” Ouch!! I found that very challenging, especially from someone who was blind but who contributed so much to humanity. This simply means that your eyesight doesn’t determine your vision, your mindsight does.
The truth is, you can’t just live your life hoping that things will turn our better. Take charge, set goals and they will connect you with that magnetic power that will pull you into the future. While on this journey, you get to understand that the question isn’t who is going to let you but it’s who is going to stop you? The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.
