“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” – Pablo Picasso
Are you frustrated with life? If so, it could mean one of two things. You either have yet to discover the meaning of your life or you’re operating in a grace your maker didn’t give you. Too many times we jump at opportunities that lean toward the side of making us more money, but is it really our gift?
Have you ever admired the life of others and wondered what your life would be like; if you had their skills, their money, or their strengths? It could be something as simple as I wish I was “that kind of mother” or “that kind of father.” How about, “I wish my husband was like so and so’s husband.” “I wish I could own a business like them.” I wish I could sing like her.” “I wish I could preach like that.” And the list goes on and on.
Finding your gift is similar to finding gold or diamonds? To find them, you need to follow a process. This process is called prospecting. Prospecting is the first stage of the geological analysis of a territory. It’s the physical search for minerals, fossils, precious metals or mineral specimens. This is a deliberate process which takes a long time and is hard. So, it requires tools, patience and preparedness to put in hard work over a long period of time.
What puts the light on in your eyes, that makes your eyes sparkle? Is it singing, dancing, playing a musical instrument or sport? Is it fixing something, growing something or building something? Do you have a knack for words, for language, for stories? What do people admire about you and say, “I wish I could do that”…yet it comes “naturally and easily” to you.
What do you love to do? Look forward to with eagerness and anticipation? What really brings you joy, makes you purposeful, that makes you feel you’re making a positive difference?
This is what your daily search should be all about. Searching for your gift and finding it will help you serve the world, that’s your purpose. This simply means your purpose is tied to your gift. The findings are always reserved for the seekers, you can’t just find your gift by sitting on the couch, that’s not prospecting. You already have the gift in you, yours is to find what it is, however long it takes you. Whenever I am speaking or coaching, people always come to me and say, “But I don’t know what my gift is, how do I find it?” This is the reason I am writing about this topic to reach out to as many people as I possible can.
Finding your gift is like finding the raw gold or diamond, you have to patiently work so hard on it to make it valuable. You have to find people that will help you by coaching and mentoring you to refine this gift until it becomes a finished product that you are proud of and that everybody wants to have. Thomas Jefferson said, “If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.”
So, in closing, three things to always remember when searching for your gift:
- Stop comparing yourself. You’ll burn out in no time if you constantly measure your progress with someone else’s. You are unique, special and different. You’ve your own path that you need to run at your own pace.
- Be patient. You can’t expect your gift to reach its full potential overnight. Forcing progress will only produce fruit that are premature, shoddy and frankly, bitter. Be willing to invest time and have a big room for disappointments and pain along the way, that’s how it is but it’s worth it.
- Be willing to learn. Be a student of life. Swallow your pride and be ready to learn from everybody. Have a mentor and coach and be willing to be an apprentice. Accept that you don’t know and be willing to be taught. Learning is the best thing that can get you to mastery.
I hope this helps you clarify some doubts and get started on this journey of finding your gift/s and work on them until they shine! The world has long been waiting for your shine, now it’s the time, shine!
