What Is Your Identity?

“To know who I am is a species of knowing where I stand. My identity is defined by the commitments and identifications which provide the frame or horizon within which I can try to determine from case to case what is good, or valuable, or what ought to be done, or what I endorse or oppose. In other words, it is the horizon within which I am capable of taking a stand.”– Charles TaylorSources of the Self: The Making of the Modern Identity

  1. Guide Your God-given power well.

Whatever you spend most of your time focusing on expands, it grows. This is because a human brain has something called Reticular Activating System (RAS) which focuses on what is important. The question is, how does it know what is important? The answer is: it works on a principle that whatever you are focusing on is what you want. It cannot differentiate between good and bad, it just uses the principle without fail and it’s very effective and efficient at this. So, understanding this important fact will add so much value into your life. So, focusing on mistakes, blaming everything and everybody, criticizing and complaining just instruct your RAS to focus on these as important for you and show you more of them which is not what you want in your life. Unfortunately, we are not taught this stuff at school, which is very sad.

  1. Have a Positive Identity.

Muhammed Ali said, “I’m the greatest! I’m the greatest thing that ever lived.” These were obviously not said in a casual manner but with so much aplomb and power, they came from the very depth of his being. Here is something very important to understand in this, Mohammed Ali, lost some fights. Losing something doesn’t mean you are a loser unless you see yourself as one. He was the greatest and he was champion, that’s how he saw himself and no amount of losing would make him think otherwise. People become and achieve things mainly as a result of their identity or self-image, which is how they see themselves in their minds. Identity or self-image shouldn’t be confused with what one sees in the mirror, that is just a physical representation of you, not really you.
People always preach about passion as the main driver to success but to me, IDENTITY is key. The downside to passion for me is that it is an emotional state which cannot entirely be relied on as it keeps on changing from time to time. This is how I have managed to turn my life around and I truly believe that you can do the same too.
My purpose in life is to inspire and empower you to realize your true potential, self-worth and achieve your dreams. I am hosting my 3rd Get Inspired Seminar on 11 November 2017 at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg. This is designed to help you discover the part of you that you never knew existed and you’ll never be the same again. My contact details are below and I look forward to inspiring and empowering you for the rest of my living days.
