“It’s not enough to be busy. So are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about.” – Henry David Thoreau
One of the most dangerous states in the world that one has to always be careful of is the state of ‘busyness’. The state of busyness can cloud your judgement. When a person has not done what they were supposed to do, the state of busyness is blamed for this, for an example.
What really keeps you busy? When last did you pause and take stock of what you have been “busy with” in the past week, month and year? Busyness doesn’t automatically translate to productiveness. Many years ago, the US’s department of social service conducted a study by interviewing hundred twenty five year old men who had all started even in life, one question they were asked was what they wanted to be by the age of sixty five. They all said they wanted to be rich by the time they were sixty five. By the age sixty five, they were all visited to check the results, which were quite astonishing. Only five were financially independent; the other five were still employed and fifty four were financially broke and depending on others (social grant and family) for life’s necessities. This is so sad, even worse because people still have not learnt from this study. They all claimed to have been “busy” for forty years (65 – 25 = 40 years), but the results showed what they were busy with. So, what are you busy with? Will it place you in the first five (financially independent), second five (still employed) or 54 (broke)?
Here are the five quick questions to ask yourself today:
- Where was I ten years ago?
- Where was I five years ago?
- Where am I now?
- Is it in line with where I am going (Do I know where I am going?)?
- Where exactly am I going?
These questions will help you re-gain your lost awareness about your purpose. Remember life is not happening to you but for you. See this life as a wonderful platform to express your gifts and uniqueness. I believe in you!
