Who Am I Becoming?

“When I was five years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” – John Lennon
Are you aware of who you are becoming in this world? Are you becoming an ideal you or what people want you to become? That’s what you need to be very much aware of. When this realization hit me, I literally woke up from sleep-walking. I was more focussing on what I was getting in life which was more about accumulation of things. The question I was asking myself was, “what am I getting?” Instead of “who am I becoming?”
Mostly, you don’t get the things you want in life which tends to result in anger and frustration. This is the reason why most people are not so happy because happiness is dependent a lot on the amount of control one has over the situation. So, from this, I can safely say that control is directly proportional to happiness meaning, more control more happiness and less control less happiness. This means that focusing solely on material things is a recipe for frustration and disappointment. Never allow yourself to be defined and controlled by material things because you may lose them at any time. When you lose something that defines you, you get lost too. Let your life be not dedicated to chasing things that will steal your freedom.
The second approach to life is about asking yourself a question, “who am I becoming.” This is about seeing yourself as the magnet of great things. You have more control on who you are becoming. This is based on the premise that if you get better, everything gets better for you. If you become more, you attract more into your life. Here’s the thing, you can never solve a level five problem with a level two solution. If you don’t raise yourself as a solution, surely problems will never come down to your level, it’s about the mountain and Mohammed story. You don’t have so much control over problems in your life but you do have control over solutions to your problems. I am sure you do get my point here.
So, who are you becoming as a citizen, leader, parent, friend, spouse, entrepreneur? Are you becoming better at these? Would you be used as an example to others and even to generations to come? Who are you helping those around you to become? Are you so busy that a week, month, or a decade has vanished? My friend, maybe it’s time to review your game plan and priorities.
